Why Anti-inflammatories can do more harm!

Written by Regenerative Health on . Posted in Treatment Discussions

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication(NSAID) are among the most commonly used medication in the world for the treatment  of Osteoarthritic symptoms and are taken by 20-30% of the elderly in developed countries. While NSAIDs show effectiveness in decreasing inflammation and pain in ligament  injuries for up to 8 weeks;long term prolonged use can have serious health risksand be counter productive to joint health. Prolotherapy offers to heal and repair joint injuries and degeneration without any of the potential health hazards.

* NSAIDS inhibit Proteoglycan synthesis which is a vital process in  the natural  healing of soft tissues.
* The use of anti-inflammatories inhibits the release of Prostaglandins and  thereby decreases blood flow to the injured area and ultimately impairs  healing and repair in the soft tissue.
*  Chronic long term use of NSAIDS actually not only hamper the soft tissue  repair but also accelerate the arthritic process as well.Research shows that joint replacements occur earlier and more frequently with patients using NSAIDS compared to those who don’t.To read more research on how NSAIDs increase cartilage degeneration in Osteoarthritis click here.
* Studies have also shown that in elderly patients , the use of NSAIDs was associated with an increased risk of atrial  fibrillation.
* NSAIDs  increase the likelihood of gastro-intestinal issues and complications  with long term use.

Prolotherapy includes injections into the joint and all ligament and tendon attachments that surround that joint .Prolotherapy stimulates the body’s natural process of healing which is  inflammation. Prolotherapy stimulates the normal inflammatory restorative mechanisms of the body, promoting normal collagen and extracellular matrix growth, which ultimately causes the connective tissues and tendons to become thicker and stronger. Prolotherapy results in a joint that is overall stronger and more stable.

Physiotherapy in combination with Prolotherapy is important in the management of chronic pain to improve the strength of the surrounding musculature and to enhance joint stability and to  improve and maintain joint mobility the.

Prolozone is a technique that combines the principles of Prolotherapy, and ozone therapy. It involves injecting combinations of  anti-inflammatory medications, homeopathics, vitamins, minerals, proliferatives, and ozone/oxygen gas into degenerated or injured joints, and into areas of pain.

In todays world of advancing modern medicine we are faced with many new and often intimidating treatment  options for joint pain and instability. What makes Prolotherapy different from other options? Prolotherapy has much research to  back its claims for successful results.

Research showed that Prolotherapy resulted in clinically meaningful sustained improvement of pain, function, and stiffness scores for knee osteoarthritis compared with blinded saline injections and at-home exercises. To read more click here. To view definitive results of Prolo  regenerating the osteoarthritic knee on X-ray,click here.

Research done on 145 lower back pain Patients showed pain levels decreased from 5.6 to 2.7 after Prolo ;89% experienced more than 50% pain relief with Prolotherapy; more than 80% showed improvements in walking and exercise ability, anxiety, depression and overall disability:75%were able to completely stop taking pain medication.
